Biography

Sarah married three times.

From the Find A Grave website:

Birth:  May 10, 1816 Rowan County North Carolina, USA Death:  Jun. 13, 1905 Danville Danville City Virginia, USA

Sarah Ann Brown was the daughter of Michael A. Brown and Jane Morgan Phillips. She was born on May 10, 1816, and died on June 13, 1905, in Danville, VA. She was married three times. Her first husband was Hugh Robinson, Jr. born April 16, 1801. He was the son of Hugh Robinson and Jane Steele. Sarah and Hugh, Jr. were married on August 2, 1839 and had two children, James Franklin and Joseph A. Robinson. Hugh died on April 1, 1844 from injuries he sustained during a farming accident.

Sarah's second husband was John A. Whitman, son of Peter Whitman and Rachel Owens Whitman, born about 1822. They had six children, of whom only four survived into adulthood. The surviving children were Amanda Cornelia Whitman, Milton Alby, John Ross Shelton, and M.C. Whitman. Sarah's second husband, John, died in a prisoner of war camp during the Civil War.

Interestingly, Sarah Ann married her third and last time on December 25, 1866. This time she married her brother-in-law, James D. Smith, born April 16, 1801. James' first wife was Sarah Ann's sister, Mary Margaret Brown. James and Sarah did not have any children as she was 50 years old when they wed. However, James did have children with Mary Margaret Brown.

It's well documented that Sarah Ann acted as a mid-wife and delivered many babies in, and around the Salisbury, Locke, and Lexington area's of NC. It's been suggested that she delivered Martha "Mattie" Colley, a next-door neighbor of both the Whitman's and Smith's, at the time Mattie would've been born so, although it's highly likely, it's not provable.

Sarah Ann died on June 13, 1905 and is interred at Green Hill Cemetery, Danville City, VA. During the last, failing years of her life, she lived with Mack, Mattie, and Edgar Whitman.

According to Cemetery records, her grave site is unmarked and she's interred in the "paupers" section of the Cemetery. Section H - Grave 30. Records also mis-spelled her name as S.A. SMITHERS.   Family links:   Parents:   Michael Brown (1779 - 1845)    Spouse:   John Alexander Whitman (1822 - 1865)*    Children:   Amanda Cornelia Whitman Kluttz (1845 - 1917)*   Milton Alby Whitman (1852 - 1929)*   Mack Connaughey Whitman (1859 - 1917)*   Note: Cem. record mis-spelled: S.A.
