Hi Mark and Susan,.
I'm sorry I have taken so long to reply. I have been busy with work; and I did go to New Zealand for a week to find a grave of a great uncle (not the Lyle side of the family).
I have had to reread the book "Bridge of Weir" as it does not have an index. I did not find much and I am not sure if any of the following is relevant:
page 7 - "the new bridge at Burngill was built about 1770, taking a single span of traffic. According to tradition, the first living creature to cross the new bridge was a cow belong to Matthew Brown, the shoemaker". page 8 - in discussing the beginnings of the village of Bridge of Weir " Arising from the needs of the miller, crofts, horses and farm implements would be the blacksmith. Robert Lang, in 1780; joiner and wheelwright/shoemaker and saddler, Mathew Brown and Robert Speirs, about 1750" (Robert Speirs was one of my ancestors). page 17 & 18 - in discussing the history of tanning in the village " .. William Lyle cordoner, or leather worker, marrying Margaret Thompson on 29th June 1676. Later on another descendant, William Lyle, married Elizabeth Brown. He was a tanner in Bridge of Weir where a fine tannery still does splendid work, and one of his sons was killed at Waterloo while serving with the Scots Greys. According the time time cited, William Lyle could have been working in the Speirs and could have married a Brown of Burngil Row." the next paragraph starts with" In June 1870.. (this is a good example of how the whole book in written!) When I visited Bridge of Weir in 2008, there appeared to be only one building left of the Burngill 'complex'.
There are one or two mentions of Browns in the 1890's.
There is no mention of Robert Lyle - some mentions of the Lyles of Scart (to whom I have not yet found a link.) , the William Lyle above and a couple of John and other William Lyles. Most of the Lyles mentioned are 'my lot' - James,, Alexander, Colqhoun, David, Peter,.
Good luck with your searching.
Regards
Pam
