Biography

Hugh was born in 1863. He was the son of David Brown and Agnes Hamilton. ^[1]

He married Georgianna Griffith in 1905. They had no children.

He passed away in 1960.

Rites Held For Hugh T. Brown, 96

Services for Hugh T. Brown, 96, 615 Fisher Ave., veteran real estate, mortgage loan, and insurance agent, who died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday in Rockford Memorial hospital, were held today in Gordon Chapel, Second Congregational church. Dr. Joseph C. Cleveland, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Ashton. Arrangements were completed in Burpee-Wood funeral home, 420 N. Main st.

Mr. Brown was once described as the "youngest nonagenarian" in Rockford. He was proprietor of the Security Agency and Loan Corp. for more than 30 years and remained active in business until his death. Born June 9, 1863, in Caledonia, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Brown, he came to Rockford on Oct. 28, 1885, to become a clothing salesman.

He opened a store with G. C. Porter as partner on Jan. 1, 1889, having bought out his own employer. On March 1, 1902, he took over Porter's share and operated the business alone until 1914, when he went into the real estate business.

Mr. Brown married Georgianna Griffith of Ashton in Oct. 1905. She died in July 1938. Mr. Brown was a member of the Rockford Board of Realtors.

Among survivors are several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Ellen Elliott, Loves Park, and Andrews Griffith and Stanwood Griffith, both of Ashton. ^[2]
