William R.E. Brown came to New Zealand with his wife from England, arriving at Wellington in Dec 1855 on the barque Surge.
As a youth he was trained in England for the army. In 1860, during the Maori Wars, he joined the militia as a Lieutenant and four years later was promoted to Captain.
In 1863 he was appointed Clerk to the Bench in Wellington.
He had three sons and three daughters all of whom married in New Zealand.
