Biography

Sarah was born about 1897, presumably in the Townland of Gowerhass, County Clare which is where all her siblings were born. She is the daughter of Patrick Browne and Catherine McInerny.

Patrick and Catherine had eight children before Catherine died on 23 November 1897 at Gowerhass, County Clare, Ireland.[1]

In the 1901 Irish Census Patrick Brown, widower, aged 46, is living in the Townland of Gowerhass with his eight children: James, Susan, Michael, Patrick, Catherine, Janie, Austin and Sarah.[2]

On 25 April 1910, Sarah Browne, child of Gowerhass, father Patrick Browne of Gowerhass, was committed to the Roman Catholic Industrial School of St Xavier's at Ennis, to be detained there until 22 November 1913. The reason Sarah was committed was stated as "has been under the care of a parent who by reason of drunken habits is unfit to have care of the child"[3].

In the 1911 Irish Census, conducted 2 April 1911, Sarah Browne is residing at the Ennis Convent Boarding School located at Quinns Row, Ennis. Sarah is enumerated on Page 7 of the scan.[4]

Research Notes

I have not been able to locate a birth registration for Sarah on Irishgenealogy.com, after search and examining all female Brown(e) births registered in Kilrush between 1896 and 1898. A theory is that her birth may have been related to the death of her mother and her birth registration was overlooked by her father at the time. Checking the local parish registers, St Senan's, should provide foundation for a birth but these are not available online for this particular year.

The Brown(e) household does not appear in the 1911 Census in Gowerhass.
