Biography

Hans Breyel and his wife Anna were the parents of three children whose marriages are found in the Dusslingen church records:

  1. Martin, b. 1619, married Anna Dürr
  2. Anna, b. c. 1625, married Conrad Dieter
  3. Ottilla, b. c. 1628, married Michael Klett

We may estimate that Hans was born in the 1590's and married around the year 1618, predating the church records. He died a young man sometime prior to 15 Oct 1639 when his widow Anna remarried in Dusslingen.

Ofterdingen Connection?

Eldest child Martin was christened in the neighboring village of Ofterdingen in 1619 but the girls are not recorded there. Presumably they were christened in Dusslingen after the family relocated there but there are no extant records to confirm this. To confuse matters note the presence in Ofterdingen of another Hans Breyel of similar age, a man who also died young. His wife was named Barbara and she also remarried in 1639.

The apparent connection to Ofterdingen has sparked attempts to assign this Hans as a son of Georg Breyel of Ofterdingen. Georg had sons Johannes (1589) and Hans (1599, noted above). Hans's wife and children are known. That leaves Johannes (1589) as the only possible connection but we must be careful. The name Hans is a diminutive of Johannes and we must assume that Georg's son Johannes died young and the name was applied to the later son Hans. Unfortunately the death records for the late 1500's are not available to us so we can't confirm this interpretation.

One christening record in Ofterdingen is unexplained. On 29 Sep 1588 Hanns Breyel and wife Maria christened a child but the name is blank.[1] This is the only record of their children.
