Herbert Leaman Bruner was born 27 Feb 1899 in Hartington, Cedar County, Nebraska[1][2], son of Ferdinand Henry Bruner (1864-1943) and Melda Maud Wadding (1878-1913). As an infant he removed with his family to Antelope, Wasco County, Oregon, and later to Whitman County, Washington. By the 1920 Census the family was in Concord, California.
Herbert was a laborer in road construction, and later a millhand. Around 1920 he partnered[3] with Ila Ione McLean (1895-1968) and had one daughter, born in Alameda County, California.

After their daughter's birth both Herbert and Ila relocated to Eureka, California, where Herbert took a job at the Eureka Woolen Mills[5] and remained for most of the rest of his life. Herbert served in the US Army in World War II from 11 Jul 1942 to 25 Feb 1943[6]. He lived in the California Veteran's Home in Yountville in his last years. He passed away 4 Apr 1972 age 73 at Holderman Hospital in Yountville[7][8].

↑ No marriage or divorce record was found, and Ila used the surname Ratti when she subsequently married Herbert O'Connor. Herbert Bruner consistently told Census takers that he had never married.
