Laban Franklin Bryant was born on March 20, 1821 in Lincoln, Tennessee, United States, son of Randolph Bryant (1786–1856) and Mary Elizabeth Alexander (1788–1866).

Laban married Nancy Emmeline Self (born on December 1, 1826).
