James moved to Illinois with his parents soon after his birth. In 1859, at age 19, he went across the plains with his brother John to California. He remained there until 1865, then returned to his old home. In 1867 he went to Kansas with three brothers; Daniel, David and Allen. All four took up claims about 4 miles north of Erie, Kansas.
In 1879 he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado to take up railroad contracting until 1883 and then returned to Kansas. For 8 years he was Street Commissioner at Parsons. He then went into the paving business until 1906 when he established a coal and feed business.
Jmes was a retailler and contractor.
