Biography

Henry William Buckerfield 1821 died 5 March 1895 aged 74 in Adelaide. On 14 March 1841 he was a factor, under age son of William Buckerfield deceased book keeper, when he married Ann Parkin who was also under age, daughter of Richard Parkin plumber, at St Bartholomew, Penn, Staffs. In 1851 Henry 29 was a factor’s clerk born in Wolverhampton and living there with Ann M 7 and Susan 5, both born in Wolverhampton. Henry William Buckerfied widower, son of William Buckerfield, married Elisa Quigg widower daughter of William Reid on 13 Aug 1868 at the residence of Rev M Williams, Kapunda. “Death of an Old Colonist. Mr. Henry Wm. Buckerfield died at his daughter's residence (Mrs. A Coxill, Flinders-street) on Tuesday, March 5. He was a highly respected and esteemed gentleman and was well known all over the colony. He arrived here in August, 1853, in the ship Ann Holsburg, and almost immediately after his arrival purchased the ironmmongery business of Mr. Tranter. The shop was situated in Currie street, where Messrs. Harrold, Colton, & Co.'s store now stands. A few years later on he disposed of the business, and in 1858 opened the Mill Inn, Gawler. He was also the host of the Miners' Arms, Kapunda, of the Angaston Hotel, and the Berkshire Hotel, Glenelg. He was for many years a resident at Tanunda. Whilst there he occupied the position of member of the school board and in his capacity as a justice of the peace he often sat on the bench at Tanunda and other country courts. He was a Freemason and belonged to several lodges. He was brought up and educated in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. He was 75 years old, and leaves a number of: married sons and daughters and grandchildren behind him. He was buried on Thursday, March 7, at the West-terrace Cemetery, when a large number of relatives and friends from the country followed him to his grave." [The Advertiser, Adelaide, 11 March 1895]
