Grace Hammersley Buckingham was born in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan on 15 Mar 1869. She was the daughter and only child of Waite Beach Buckingham, a miller, and Fanny Hammersley, an immigrant from England.[1][2]
When she was a child, her family moved to Stevens Point in Portage County, Wisconsin, where her father found work as an insurance agent and her mother as a teacher. At the time of the 1880 census, when Grace was 11 years old, they were living in a hotel on Marie Street.[3]
Grace attended Smith College a small, private women's college located in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. In 1889, she was a member of the First Class.[4]
Grace married John Charles Campbell in Stevens Point on 10 Sep 1895, with her parents and John's widowed mother as witnesses.[5] Although his occupation, at the time of their marriage, was "missionary," they may have lived in Stevens Port at least periodically. Their first child, a son they named Stuart Wallace Campbell, was born in Stevens Port on 4 May 1897,[6] but died (also in Stevens Port) at the age of six weeks, on 14 Jun 1897.[7]
Grace Hammersley (Buckingham) Campbell died at home in Demorest, Habersham County, Georgia on 20 Mar 1905. She was buried in Forest Cemetery in Stevens Point, Portage County, Wisconsin.[8]
