Biography

George Creed Budd was born 4 September 1814 and was registered on 10 December 1814 at Morice Square Baptist, Devonport, Devon[1]. He was the eldest son of John Budd and Sally Vigurs.

His father John died some time before 1851.

On 2 January 1851 he attained his Master's Certificate of Service after having been employed for 24 years as an Apprentice Mate and Master in the British Merchant Service, in the Foreign Trade.

In the 1851 England Census, George Budd (aged 36, Married and a Master Mariner) was probably recorded at Cogan Street, Nile Place, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire. Also in the household was 23 year old Maria Budd.

The following was printed on page 8 of the Hull Daily News dated 19 June 1852:

WEDNESDAY.
(Before Messrs. Cookman, Henwood, and Blyth.)
George Creed Budd was brought up charged with being drunk and disorderly, and also with attempting to commit suicide. The unfortunate man, who is evidently labouring under some mental malady, was last night seen in Bishoplane, by police constable 60, creating a great disturbance; on leaving there, it appears that he went to one of the wharfs in High Street, and was just on the point of plunging into the river, when the constable apprehended him. The case was remanded till Saturday, to allow time to procure the friends of the prisoner to attend.[2]

On page 8 of the Hull Daily News dated 25 June 1852, the following appeared:

George Creed Budd, who had been remanded on the charge of having attempted to commit suicide whilst under the influence of drink, was again brought up; and, having received some salutary advice from Mr. Thompson, was discharged.[3]

Four months later, the following was published on page 4 of the Hull Daily News dated 16 October 1852:

ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.—Our readers will remember that, some time ago, a man, named George Creed Budd, was brought up before the magistrates charged with having attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the dock. It was evident that he had done this under the influence of drink, and, on promising not to offend again, was discharged. Last Saturday night he was drinking in the Golden Cup, Humber-street, when suddenly he took out of his pocket a large clasp knife, and plunged it into his breast. Immediate assistance was obtained, Mr. Lowther, surgeon, being speedily on the spot; and, under that gentleman's treatment, we believe the would-be suicide is progressing favourably.[4]

He probably passed away in March 1877 and was buried on 29 March 1877 at Plymouth, Devon[5].
