Biography

Birth: Jan. 2, 1710[1] Arneys Mount Burlington County New Jersey, USA Death: Aug. 28, 1770

William Budd III (1710-1770), son of William Budd II (1680-1727) and wife Elizabeth Stockton (1682-1738), was a vestrymen of St. Andrew's Church, and was buried in its cemetery, on land given to the church by his grandfather, William Budd (1649-1722), who is buried with his wife, Ann, at St. Mary's episcopal churchyard.

St. Andrews Parish was instituted in 1766. Rev. Colin Campbell, John Munrow, Thomas Cooper, Thomas Budd, Samuel Woolston, John Clark, David Jones, James Dobbins, William Woolston, James Allen, Joseph Muncil, Peter Bard and John Budd, managers and overseers of St. Andrews Church of Mount Holly, presented a "humble petition" to Governor William Franklin praying for a Royal Charter of Incorporation in that year. The members of the "body politic and corporate" named in the charter were: Rev. Colin Cnmpbell, Thomas Budd, John Munrow, John Clark, Thomas Reynolds, John Budd, Samuel Woolston, Thomas Cooper, William Woolston. Daniel Jones, William Budd, William Budd, Jr., of New Hanover, Daniel Toy, James Dobbins, Sr., and James Galby "and their successors to be elected as in herelnafter subscribed."' The Charter was granted by King George III on October 28, 1766, and ls now the Church's most prized possession.

Among the first church wardens and vestrymen were four of William Budd's sons and grandsons. Many of William and Ann's descendants are buried in the churchyard there. Some of their children and grandchildren moved to Philadelphia and as time passed went on further west so there are thousands of Budd descendants all over the country who can call William Budd, Gentleman, their ancestor.
