Oscar was born 4 November 1834, in Lemington, Vermont. He was the son of Artemus Wilder Buffington (1798-1835) and Dorcas (Abbot) Buffington (1796-abt.1842). [1]

Oscar's father died a year after he was born, in 1835. His mother died when he was 8 years old, in 1842. In 1850, Oscar is living in Troy, New York, with his sister Dorcas Buffington.[2]

Oscar married Elizabeth (Forbes) Buffington (abt.1841-1884) on 29 May 1861, in Troy, New York.[3]

Elizabeth and Oscar had one child, Alice W Buffington, born 6 February 1862. Oscar had enlisted on 6 April 1861 as a private in Company E, 62nd Regiment, New York Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 1 September 1861. Oscar was killed in action on 5 May 1862, in Williamsburg, Virginia.[4][5] In his pension paperwork, there is a letter describing his death. He was hit by a ball through his left lung. He was taken from the field to the hospital. His first words after he fell was "give my rifle to my wife."

Oscar is buried in the Yorktown National Cemetery in Yorktown, York County, Virginia.[6]
