WEDDING IN LITHGOW.
A numerous and interested gathering assembled, at St. Paul's Church of England on Wednesday afternoon to witness the marriage of Mr. Arthur James Merrick, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Merrick, of Hassan's Walls, and Miss Mary Blanch (Mamie), eldest daughter of the late Mr. Henry Bull. The weather was bright and cheerful—ideal for an event of the kind—and the Rev. Dixon Hudson went through the ceremony with impressive solemnity. Punctually at three, the bride entered the church on the arm of her brother-in-law, Mr. J. Scott, and was met at the altar-rails by the bridegroom and his groomsman, Mr. A. E. Merrick. Miss Peacock, of Coonamble, presided at the organ, and proceedings commenced , with "The Voice that Breathed O'er Eden." The bride looked very pretty in a gown of cream figured voile, the skirt of which was handsomely trimmed with satin bebe ribbon: the bodice was richly ornamented with white satin and Paris lace, and goffered chiffon. She also wore a chiffon sash and the customary wreath and veil, a gold necklet with gold and pearl heart pendant; and carried a shower bouquet, the latter two being gifts of the bridegroom. The chief bridesmaid was Miss Ruby Bull (sister of the bride), who was dressed in cream voile, trimmed with cream vak insertion; she also wore a sash to match and wreath of jasmine. Miss Lela Merrick (sister of the bridegroom), second bridesmaid, was costumed in blue Japanese silk, trimmed with cream silk and Paris lace: cream sash and jasmine wreath. Both bridesmaids wore gold necklets, and carried bouquets, the gifts of the bridegroom. As the happy couple retraced their steps down the aisle, the bride received copious showers of rose-leaves and other flowers, while rice and confetti formed the fusilade which followed them from the church door, to the conveyance in waiting to take the bridal party to "Fern Hill House," Hassan's Walls, the residence of the bridegroom's parents, where a reception was held, and the wedding breakfast partaken of by between sixty and seventy guests. The breakfast, was laid out in the spacious dining-room, which had been converted into a veritable fern bower for the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Merrick. sen., presided, while the bride's mother and Rev. Dixon Hudson occupied the vice end of the table. The bridal party sat in the centre, opposite a handsome three-decker cake, presented to the bride by her late employers, the Lithgow Co-operative Society. The Rev. Mr. Hudson proposed "The Bride and Bridegroom." which was responded to by the latter on behalf of himself and wife. Mr. Albert Merrick proposed the "Bridesmaids," responded to by Mr. Crowe. Mr. H. Bayliss proposed "The Parents of the Bride and Bridegroom," to which Mr. R. Merrick, jun., and Mr. J. Scott, responded. Mr. Crowe proposed "The Press," which was acknowledged by the "Mercury's" representative. By eight o'clock the room was cleared and dancing, games, and harmony, interspersed with refreshments, became the order until an early hour on Thursday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Merrick will reside close to the old homestead. A fact worth mentioning is that the whole family, consisting of six daughters and six sons, were present at the wedding, a circumstance particularly pleasing to the parents. On a sideboard were set out the presents received by the young couple. These were both numerous and useful, and, with the exception of a gift of a portion of land by Mr. Merrick, senior, were as follows:—Mother of bride, cabinet sewing machine and cutlery; mother of bridegroom, handsome pedestal lamp and glasses; Mr. and Mrs. R.
