Biography

She is the daughter of Benjamin Burch and Rebecca Barron.

She married George Jones Cain of Tennessee on May 29, 1828, in Washington, D.C. The service was performed by the Rev. Mr. Lucas.^[1]

She died on January 21, 1837, "after a lingering illness" in Washington, D.C. She is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in the District of Columbia and her burial is noted on Find A Grave.^[2]

She left a will dated December 5, 1836 and probated on January 30, 1837. Her abstracted will reads:

CAIN, MARTHA MARY, widow of George Jones Cain, of Tenn., dec.

Property of late husband when sold: 1/3 to testator, 1/3 to each of the couple's children: Catherine Rebecca and Jonathan Fendall Cain; whereas another child born after his death, George Russell Cain; Martha was admx. of husband's estate in Tenn. and sold estate and notes therefrom placed in hands of friend and agent Major Russell Dance, of Tenn.; Dance to admin. Martha Cain's estate in Tenn. Dance to sell servants Dolly and her four children: Ambrose, Silvia, Lavinia and infant boy, together with Louisia and John, proceeds from which to sister Mildred Mary Rhodes, of Washington City, and she appointed guardian of three infant children: Catherine Rebecca, Jonathan Fendall and George Russell Cain; else the Court to appoint a Roman Catholic to be guardian; children should board with testator's mother, and sent to a Roman Catholic seminary or college.
