Avery "Riller" Burchfield was mentioned in the Story of Cades Cove.
Arabella "Arbila" was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Hill Burchfield. Her father, born in Burke County, NC, and her mother, daughter of Green Hill of Haywood County, NC, had moved to Cades Cove by 1840 and settled on 150 acres of land he had bought in 1834. They were the first of the Burchfields to move to the Cove. They were the parents of ten children. After Elizabeth died in 1841, her father married Mary "Polly" Gregory by whom he had at least seven more children.
Arbila had married Thomas Davis in Burke County in 1830. Tom was a son of legendary Revolutionary War soldier William Davis and Franky Carpenter. Their first two children, William and Louisa, were born in the Linville Falls area of NC. Daughter Nancy was born in Cades Cove in 1835 and at least four more of their children were born there: Jacob, John Robert, Frances Jane, and Burton Albert. Amanda may have been born there before they moved to Graham County, NC, where their youngest child, George Washington Davis was born. George's son James Davis is buried in Calderwood Cemetery near Arbila in Calderwood, Blount County, Tennessee, along with most of James's family. Arbila's husband Tom is buried at Lone Oak Cemetery in Graham County, NC.[1]
