Biography

Wikitree profile - Unknown Burchfield 806 A starting point. Unless specified, information here makes no claim as to the relationship of individuals listed. The earliest dates that I have found are listed with the names. A close observation of the dates, except for two, are grouped close enough to indicate a family connection although there is none proven. The only connection is place, Baltimore County Maryland. That is significant for in 1700 the area was small indeed. So allow your mind to regress. Eliminate all knowledge acquired after 1750 and enter the starting point.

Spelling of Burchfield is that which I use and in my opinion similar spelling of a name is of no significance when dealing with genealogy. I have only found limited information on several of these but they did leave records.

Service means that one agreed to act as a servant for a period of years. A servant was entitled to claim fifty acres upon completion of his period of service.

The name Paca is pronounced PAY-ka; we know this because of a rhyme that William Paca wrote. The name was most likely a corruption of the name Peaker, Packe, or Peake, to name a few; contemporary documents that have shown different versions of Robert Paca’s last name.

Is Thomas Busfield above actually a Burchfield? It's apparent to me that spelling is not a practical way to determine the validity of the question. Samuel Burchfield for instance is spelled two ways in the same source and Thomas Busfield is the only Busfield in the source. No Busfield appears in the Abstracts of land Commissions below, in St. George's Parish Registers 1689 - 1793, Bill and Martha Reamy, or in Settlers of Maryland, Peter Wilson Coldham. So, to get around the spelling uncertainty, I look for other sources and although they are not conclusive one will have to admit that there is likely some connection. The sources: 1655 December 12 Thomas Blashfield of Leintwardine, Herf, laborer, bound to Thomas Watkins of Bristol, Surgeon, to serve three years in Barbados.

  • City of Bristol Record Office, England.

No Blashfield in the Abstracts of land Commissions below, in St. George's Parish Registers 1689 - 1793, Bill and Martha Reamy, or in Settlers of Maryland, Peter Wilson Coldham. 1656 March 25 - Southey Littleton, 2340 acres, Northampton county Virginia, Nodris (Nondui) Creek, bounded by the main Bay of Chesapeake and Arracock creek and land of John Wise; Transportation of 47 persons; ... Thomas Busfeild (Buffeild) ... .

  • Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants 1623 - 1666, Nell Marion Nugent.

1678/79, Roger Burchfield was buried in Saint Lucy’s Parish, Barbados.

  • Census of Barbados 1679/80.

It would appear that Thomas Burchfield and not Samuel Burchfield was the first Burchfield in the American Plantations and that he was first transported to Barbados by Thomas Watkins then to Northampton county Virginia by Southey Littleton. Thus, Mary Bruckfield in the will of Forker Frissell would probably be the wife of Thomas. Mary being the daughter or sister of Forker Frissell. There is probably a relationship between Thomas Watkins and John Watkins.
