John Burdick was born 25 Sep 1762 in Westerly, a town on the southwestern coastline of Kings (later Washington) County, Rhode Island Colony.[1] He was the son of Christopher Burdick and his wife Chloe Greenman of Westerly, who would move to North Stonington, New London County, Connecticut Colony.[2]
Marriage
John Burdick married Susan Hiscox about 1786 (estimated) , probably in Westerly.
Susan Hiscox was born about 1762 (estimated), most likely in Westerly, as records show that there were Hiscox family members in Westerly.[3]
According to the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census, John and Susan lived in Westerly and then also moved to North Stonington, just a few miles from Westerly, per the 1820 and 1830 census.
Children
The children of John Burdick and his wife Susan Hiscox included:[2]
John Burdick (about 1787–Deceased), died in New Orleans, served in War of 1812
Sea Capt. Christopher Burdick (1788–1833), married Mary Fellows, Lydia Easton (widow of brother Henry)[4]
Joseph Burdick (1789–1856), married Sally Fellows[5]
Susanna Burdick (1791–Deceased), married Joshua Clarke
Unidentified son, died young, drowned at Stillmanville (Westerly neighborhood)
Henry Burdick (1796–1817), married Lydia Easton (who later married brother Christopher)[6]
Elizabeth "Betsey" Burdick (1799–1887), married Albert White, Rufus Ames (2nd wife)[7]
Eunice Burdick (1801–1845), married Rufus Ames (1st wife)[8]
Thomas Hiscox Burdick (1805–1891), married Abby Bromley[9]
Lucinda Burdick (1807–Deceased), married Gorham Holmes
Mary Burdick (1808–Deceased), married Billings Merritt
Stephen (?)
Because records show certain children were born in either Stonington or Westerly, it is possible that Susan also gave birth at the home of another family member in the neighboring town. Census records show that John's parents also moved to North Stonington.
