Michael Burke was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, according to family lore. This is not yet proven. He arrived in the United States in 1863, alone, listed as 15 years old.
[1]
He became a brick layer, working initially in Albany, New York. Due to his red hair, he became known as "Mick the Brick".
Michael married Hannah Corcoran in 1871 at St John the Evangelist RC Church in New York City.
[2]
They had 5 daughters and one son who survived to adulthood.
In the 1900, census Michael (age 51), Brick Layer, was with his wife and children in the home of his mother-in-law Elizabeth (Martin) Corcoran at 126 West 50th Street, Manhattan, New York City, New York. Michael's birth was recorded as September 1849. He arrived from Ireland in 1863 and had been in the USA for 37 years.[3]
After Hannah's death in 1902, Michael lived with his daughters' families. [4][5]
until his own death in 1914. [6]
