Biography

Clara (Burkes) Horn was a Mississippian.

Clara Gertrude Burkes was born to William Burkes and Sallie Scrivner in Leake County, MS on 11 March 1902. Clara had 4 sisters and 1 brother: [[Burkes-20|Icie Fletter Burkes Dodd]; [[Burkes-242|Flora Etta Burkes]; Riley Everette Burkes (1898-1972); Dollie Gray Burkes (1910-abt.1910); and Infant Burkes (1893-1893).

By 1920, Jimmy and Clara at ages 21 and 18, were living in Beat 1 of Leake County, MS with their first child, James Martin Horn . They lived next door to Jimmy's mother, father, and brother Charlie Washington Horn. Jimmy and Clara were able to read and write according to the 1920 US Federal Census.[1]

James and Clara were living on Marydell and Renfroe Road in Beat 1 of Leake County, Mississippi in 1930, according to the 1930 US Federal Census. James was 31 years old and Clara was 26. At this time they had 3 children, James Martin Horn age 10; Clara Thelma Horn age 7; and Kenneth Arlie Horn age 4. Jimmy was farming for work. Jimmy's sister Effie Angie Horn Douglas and her husband Otis were living near by with their children.[2]

By the time the 1940 US Federal Census was taken, Jimmy and Clara had 2 sons and 3 daughters living in their home in Leake County, MS. The 1940 US Federal Census indicates that Jimmy completed the 8th grade in education and owned his own farm.

According to the 1950 US Federal Census, Jimmy and Clara lived on Renfroe Marydell Road in Leake County, MS with three of their children; James M. Mildred E.; and Wilma L. Horn. The census lists Mildred E. Horn as 19 years old and working as a high school history teacher.

Clara Gertrude Horn died in Leake County, MS on 15 Nov 1997. She is buried in Salem Baptist Cemetery in Leake County, MS.
