Birth

George Parker Burlingame was born on 21 November 1856 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, United States to Asa Fayette Burlingame (1825-1888) and Emeline Parker (1828-1906).

Marriage and Family

He married Augusta Bender (1859-1894) c. 1882. George was still single on the June 1880 Census and his first child was born at the end of December 1884.

  1. George Asa Burlingame was born on 21 December 1884 in Olean Cattaraugus, New York, USA. He married Elizabeth McAdam (1894-1976) on 14 January 1920 at Saint Mary's Church in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York. George died on 21 December 1951 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, USA.
  2. Mary R. Burlingame, called May, was born in September 1886 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, USA. She married Henry Edward Edel (1881-1966). May died in 1966.
  3. John Conrad Burlingame was born on 16 July 1888 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, USA. He married Nina Ann Morgan (1889-1961) on 18 November 1909 in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai, Idaho. John died on 31 March 1979 in Santa Barbara, California, USA.
  4. Frederick Le Roy Burlingame, called Fred Roy, was born on 20 March 1890 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, USA. He married Delia Agnes Gallagher (1890-1944) on 29 June 1916 in Cattaraugus, New York, USA. Fred died on 4 August 1950 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, USA.
  5. Walter Wallace Burlingame was born on 12 March 1893 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, USA. He married Helen May Murphy (1894-1957) on 2 March 1916 in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York. Walter died on 18 May 1964 in Rhinelander, Oneida, Wisconsin, USA.

Accident loosing sight in one eye

On 13 March 1887, he was injured by the premature explosion of a quantity of gunpowder which he had placed under the roots of a stump that he wanted to remove. His face was badly burned and he was completely blind for a time. [1]

2nd Accident, Death and Burial

George died on 30 January 1895 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, United States at the age of 38 in a tragic work related accident at the James & W.P. Pierce Tannery in Olean. He had been in the vat house and hauling lumber up through an outside window. His clothing probably somehow wound around the revolving shaft and he fell through the loft into machinery. He was terribly mangled. Dr. Mudge arrived and George was already dead. There was a Coroner's Jury Inquest into his death. The company was said to have been careless by not covering or boxing the coupling on the shaft that caught him and mangled him to death. Since his wife had died about a year before and he left 5 orphans. He is said to have been survived by his mother, his brother Edgar both of Olean.

Burial

He was buried in the Allegany Cemetery, Allegany, Cattaraugus, New York. Plot: Section B5, Lot 19, Grave 5. There is a headstone photo available. Find A Grave: Memorial #103506448
