Biography

Eulalie was born in Unley, South Australia 1883. She is the daughter of Richard Thomas Burnard and Alice Hardy Hanton. She passed away in North Adelaide during 1907.

Eulalie was born in Unley, South Australia on 24 December 1883.[1]

Eulalie married Dean Dawson in Beaumont, South Australia on 23 March 1907.[2] The following marriage notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Advertiser, on 8 April 1907:[3]

DAWSON-BURNARD.-On the 23rd March, at Beaumont, Dean Dawson, to Eulalie Burnard. At home, Laura, April 18 and 19.

Eulalie died in North Adelaide, South Australia on 5 September 1907 at the age of 23 years.[4] The following death notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Advertiser, on 6 September 1907:[5]

DAWSON-On the 5th September, at the North Adelaide Hospital, Eulalie, the dearly beloved wife of Dr. Dean Dawson, of Laura.

Eulalie was buried at the Payneham Cemetery in Payneham, South Australia.[6]

The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Chronicle, on 14 September 1907:[7]

Mrs. Dawson, wife of Dr. Dean Dawson, of Laura, died at the North Adelaide Private Hospital just before midnight on September 5. She was a daughter of Mr. E. T. Burnard, of the Flinders-street school, and not long ago completed a brilliant course in medicine and surgery at the Adelaide University, where she took her degrees in 1905. Every year she was placed in the first class, and more than one occasion she beat all the other students. She was exceedingly popular with her fellow students, who admired her ability, and were attracted to her by the natural sweetness of her disposition. Dr. Dawson was a fellow student with his wife, and he graduated in the same year, Mrs. Dawson being second from the top, and her husband fifth. Her brother, with whom she had taken the course from the beginning, graduated in the previous year, his sister having had to relinquish study for twelve months in consequence of ill-health. Like her husband, Mrs. Dawson was a house surgeon at the Adelaide Hospital. They were married early in the present year, and went to Laura to practise. About a fortnight ago Mrs. Dawson was taken ill, and she had to come to Adelaide for surgical attendance, an operation being performed shortly after her arrival. She received all the attention and help that loving medical skill could command, but from the first her case was recognised as being very serious.
The flag at the Flinders-street State School was flying half-mast on September 6 out of respect for the memory of the late Dr. Eulalie Dawson, daughter of Mr. R. T. Burnard (the headmaster). Friday had been selected as visiting day at the school, but, of course, the affair was postponed. Many letters of sympathy have been received by Mr. Burnard in connection with the death of his brilliant and accomplished daughter, among them being one from the chair man of the Adelaide School Board of Advice (Councillor Bonython).
