Biography

Date of Birth; Parentage

Based on his date of marriage, Thomas was probably born sometime in 1577-1586. He was most likely the son of John Burne of Derby, as there appear to have been only two Burne men in Derby at the appropriate time who were having children -- John Burne and William Burne -- and William had a son named Thomas, born in 1572, who was probably the Thomas Burne who married Elizabeth Egginton. An additional supporting fact is that John Burne's son Hamlet's children were baptized as St. Alkmund's, as were those of this profile's Thomas.

If Thomas was the son of John Burne, he was probably born sometime in 1577-1581, as the the period from 1582-1586 is fairly well filled with the births of other of John's children. In addition, baptismal records prior to 1582 seem to be lacking for John's children, which would be consistent with the lack of a baptismal record for Thomas.

Marriage

Thomas Buerne married Elizabeth Fisher in 1607 at St. Alkmund, Derby in Derbyshire, England. His wife may have been the Elizabeth Fisher, daughter of Henry Fisher, who was baptized at All Saints Church in Derby in January 1590(/1?).[1] However, a Henry Fisher also had a daughter Elizabeth Fisher who was baptized at All Saints Church in September 1597,[2] so it is likely that the Elizabeth Fisher who was baptized at All Saints in 1590/1 died young and that Thomas Burne's wife was a different Elizabeth Fisher for whom a birth or baptismal record has not yet been found.

Children

Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children, all baptized as St. Alkmund:

  1. Alice, bpt. October 24, 1613 (father Thomas, mother not listed),[3] no Derby record of marriage or death
  2. Anna, bpt. September 1614 (father Thomas, mother not listed),[4] no Derby record of marriage or death
  3. John, bpt. September 1615, d. October 1615 (father Thomas, mother not listed)[5]
  4. John, bpt. June 1618 (father Thomas, mother not listed),[6] no Derby record of marriage or death
  5. Thomas, bpt. June 1619, d. June 1619 (father Thomas, mother not listed)[7]
  6. Elizabeth, bpt. October 29, 1620 (father Thomas, mother not listed),[8] there is a record of an Elizabeth Burne marrying a Henry Bradshaw in Horsley, Derbyshire (7 miles from Derby) in February 1642,[9] but unclear whether that relates to this Elizabeth
  7. Thomas, bpt. April 1622, (father Thomas, mother not listed),[10] perhaps buried August 30, 1622 at All Saints Church[11]
  8. Mary, bpt. April 10, 1623 (father Thomas, mother not listed),[12] no Derby record of marriage or death but may have died young
  9. Mary, bpt. September 5, 1629 (father Thomas, mother Elizabeth),[13] no Derby record of marriage or death
  10. Martha, bpt. February 27, 1630(/1?) (father Thomas, mother Elizabeth, last name listed as "Burnds"),[14] no Derby record of marriage or death

Since Thomas and Elizabeth were married in 1607 and yet the first child listed above was not baptized until 1613, it is reasonable to suspect that they had 2-3 additional children who were born in 1607-12.

Additional Information

The registry of St Alkmunds contains the following entry from 1624:

In August, the belfrey of St. Alkmund was finally repaired, and a fourth bell was cast. Henry Coke being minister, Thomas Burne and Samuel Storer, churchwardens, Robert Caddow and Joseph Reeve the workmen, and the whole work was completed on the 14th day of August, 1624. On which day, Kin James,, together with Prince Charles, entered the town of Derby in their progress, and remained in this town two nights.[15]

No further Derby record likely relating to this profile's Thomas has been found. There is a record of a Thomas Bourne, son of Thomas, being buried in 1650 at All Saints Church in Derby,[16] but it is unclear whether either relates to this Thomas, and most likely that it does not since all of this Thomas Burne's records relate to St. Alkmund, Derby.

Was He Thomas Bourne of Marshfield, Plymouth Colony?

This profile's Thomas Burne may have been the Thomas Bourne who moved to the Plymouth Colony in 1637. For a discussion of that possibility, see Thomas Burne of Derby and Thomas Bourne of Marshfield.
