Biography

Sarah was born in September of 1873[1] to John and Mary Burns.[2]

Sarah was adopted by Avery C. van Dyke and his wife, Elizabeth, some time between 1875[3] and1880, when she was listed in their household as Sarah van Dyke, age 6, "adopted."[4]

She married Olin T. Hinman in Stamford on 26 September 1894.[5] They moved to Gilboa, Schoharie County, New York, in 1904, where Olin was building a feed and grain supply business. The family was enumerated there in 1905.[6] When Olin died suddenly of appendicitis in June, 1905 shortly after this census was taken, Sarah was left a widow with four young children: Avery V. (8), Bradley S. (4), Iva C. (2), and Florence A. (5 months old).

Soon after her husband's death, Sarah moved back to Stamford, Delaware County. In 1908, Olin Hinman's uncle Chancey B. Hinman died and left a legacy for the widow and children of his nephew.[7]

In 1910, Sarah was living on West End Avenue in Stamford and headed a household consisting of:[8]

  • Sarah Hinman, 36, Head, b. New York, both parents b. NY, widow, mother of four children, all still living
  • Avery V Hinman, 13, Son, b. New York, both parents b. NY
  • Bradley S Hinman, 9, Son, b. New York, both parents b. NY
  • Ira C Hinman, 6, Daughter, b. New York, both parents b. NY
  • Florence A Hinman, 5, Daughter, b. New York, both parents b. NY

Sarah and her children made frequent visits back to Gilboa to visit her sister, Della Rifenburgh.[9] One notice, printed sometime in 1911, noted that Sarah had recently been hospitalized[10]

"Avery Hinman, Bradley Hinman, Iva and Florence Hinman of Stamford are guests of their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Rivenburg, where they will be joined by their mother, Mrs. Sarah Hinman, on her return from the Albany hospital."

Sarah Hinman died in Stamford on 27 September 1912 after a long illness.[11] Sarah's children were taken in by her sister and brother-in-law and were living with them in Gilboa in 1920.[12]
