Sarah and the 1891 census: From Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal (NSW : 1851 - 1904), Monday 13 April 1891, page 2:

An Old Couple. — Says the Windsor Australian : As one of the census collectors was going his rounds he came across an aged couple at Pitt Town. Mr. and Mrs, James Horton, to take the old lady's version, have been together for over 70 years, which is span of life allotted to man. The old lady is the senior by seven years, being 89, and the old gentleman, who, by-the-by, is a native of Pitt Town, is 82 years old. Mrs. Horton came to the colony when a child, 80 years ago, and from that time she has resided at Pitt Town, and when the collector asked her the question, she said, " Why, I've been with my old man over 70 years, and he never left Pitt Town in his life." Fancy this worthy old couple vegetating in the classic region of Pitt Town for three score years and ten. They are the progenitors of half the side of the country, and yet the old lady complains that she thinks she is getting feeble and fears she won't live to see another decade.

Obituaries

  • Her Obituary in the Australian Town and Country Journal, Saturday 16 June 1900, p22 This article includes her photograph:
The Late Mrs. Horton.
Recently there passed away at the sequestered village of Pitt Town, on the Hawkesbury, Mrs. Sarah Horton, better known as "Granny" Horton throughout the district, and who had passed considerably beyond the allotted span. Mrs. Horton was not born on the Hawkesbury, but she had been associated with the district for so lengthy a period that she might fairly have been claimed as native-born. Her native English county was Yorkshire, where she was born in the year 1801, coming to New South Wales in 1810, being then only 9 years of age. Her father was in the army, having then served 28 years, and the same ship which carried father and daughter to Australia also brought no less a personage than Lachlan Macquarie, the well-known Governor of N.S.W. She married Robert Horton, who died at Pitt Town in 1893, at the advanced age of 88 years. There were sixteen children of the marriage. She had resided in the village where she has just passed away almost from the time of her arrival in the colony, never having been more than twenty miles from her home. She retained her faculties almost to the last, and her favorite occupation was knitting, at which she was quite an adept. She leaves a host of descendants.
  • Her Obituary in Windsor and Richmond Gazette (NSW : 1888 - 1961), Saturday 2 June 1900, page 8:
The Late Mrs. Sarah Horton.
Though not Hawkesbury-born, the late Mrs Sarah Horton, who died at Pitt Town on Monday, was so near to being one, and had been associated with the district for such a lengthy period, that she could fairly be claimed as one of our own. Her native English county was Yorkshire, where she first saw the light in the year 1801, and was at the time of her death 99 years and eleven months old. She came to New South Wales in 1810, when only nine years of age. Her father was in the Army, having at that time served 28 years, and the same ship that carried father and daughter to Australia brought no less a personage than Lachlan Macquarie, a Governor whose rule in this land was wise and beneficent. Marrying Robert Horton, who died at Pitt Town in July, 1893, at the age of 88 years. She had no less than 18 children, only five of whom survive, the eldest being Robert, who, in his 73rd year, still resides in the little village of Pitt Town, where he was born. From the time the deceased arrived in Pitt Town, over 80 years ago, up to the time of her death, she had not been more than ten miles from her home — a circumstance which serves to prove that her disposition was not one of a roaming character. The descendants are many, and her name was a household word in the village in which she had so long been located. That she was of a contented mind is shown by the fact that she had remained so continuously during a long lapse of years in such a quiet little hamlet as Pitt Town, and went to show that the outside world held few charms for her. Until a few years ago the deceased was a very active woman, and was able to get about without the slightest difficulty, but for some time prior to her death had been an invalid and a great sufferer, her end coming as a release from her sufferings. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Town, and was largely attended by relatives and friends, the remains being interred in the Church of England cemetery. The Rev W S. Newton, M A, and the Rev. T H Taylor conducted the funeral service, and Mr T Primrose, of Windsor, carried out the duties of undertaker. The father of the late Mrs Horton resided in Parramatta between the years 1815 and 1820. Besides her 18 children deceased has left a long line of descendants, four generations in all, numbering 80 or 90 grandchildren, over 150 great grand children, and about 50 great great grandchildren. The pall-bearers at the funeral were Messrs Phillips, Huxley, Stubbs, and Maxwell.
