Biography

Judith Irene Burroughs/Burris was born in about 1870 in North Carolina. She was the daughter of Joshua Christian Burroughs Jr and Rachel Catherine Lowder.^[1][2] She preferred her middle name, Irene, later in life.^[3]

She lived with her parents and siblings in Big Lick, Stanly County, North Carolina, United States, through 1880.^[4][5]

In 1920, Irene Hamilton (age 46) was the married head of household in Township 8 Mendenhall, Newberry, South Carolina, United States. No husband was present. Also in the household were her adopted sons, Harris and Eugene Goldman.^[6] The young men were working as farm labor for Leo Hamilton in 1917 when they registered for the World War I draft.^[7][8] In 1920, Leo was living in Newberry where he was working as an auto dealer. He was sharing a residence with another auto dealer, D. R. Scurry.^[9] While no marriage record has been found for Leo Hamilton and Judith Irene Burris, it is likeley that they were living in South Carolina as a married couple in 1900 and 1910.^[10][11]

In 1940, Irene (age 69) was the wife of Harris Goldman in Butler Township, Greenville, South Carolina, United States.^[12]

In 1950, Irene (age 79) was the wife of Harris Goldman in Butler Township, Greenville, South Carolina, United States.^[13]

Irene, daughter of Christian Burris & Catherine, died (age 85) on 24 January 1957 in Austin Township, Greenville County, South Carolina, United States.^[1] She was buried in Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery, Greer, Greenville County, where she shares a gravestone with husband Harris and his second wife.^[14] Irene's obituary was published in The Greenville News on 25 January 1957 in Greenville, South Carolina,^[2] and The State on 27 January 1957 in Columbia, South Carolina.^[15]

Research Notes

McGee-1611 14:57, 2 November 2023 (UTC) - Judy is said to have gone to Arkansas with her half-brother, Alex Whitley in the early 1890s. While there, a man was murdered. Burris is a common name in the Concord area. No direct evidence has been found by this researcher to date to indicate that Judith Irene, daughter of JC Burrough, is the same person as Judy Burris, half-sister of Alex Whitley.

Some researchers have conflated Judie Burroughs who married George Cheek with Judie Burroughs/Burris who married Harris Goldman. Judie Burroughs Cheek's parents were identified as David Burrough and Jennie Boroughs in her and George's marriage license. She and George were both from Moore County, North Carolina, and black. It is doubtful that the two Judies are the same person.
