Biography

Judith Butler was born in Ireland, probably around 1728, since one of her sons was born in 1748. She was married to Thomas Tennant, and they had three sons (Robert, Richard and Thomas) and three daughters (Ann, Julia also known as Judith, and Mary). Judith and Thomas are buried in Aghade in County Carlow, Ireland.[1]

Family lore states that Thomas worked as a stonemason on Judith’s father’s estate. They fell in love, eloped, and she was disinherited, but happy. Supposedly Judith’s father was a Baronet and the estate was Ballin Temple in Barragh, County Carlow.[1]

Many people take this statement as fact and add Sir Richard Butler and Henrietta Percy to their family tree, but there is no evidence to show that they were Judith's parents. See the Sources in their profiles for further investigation. There is also no evidence for Judith as their daughter, as shown on Sir Richard's Wikipedia page.[2]

My father is a 10th cousin minus 8 of Richard Butler, and also descends from the Irish Persses, who descend from the Northumberland Percys. He shares a fair bit of DNA (including trace) with Michelle O'Hara (his GEDmatch QS2227782). (and also Robin Dudgeon GEDmatch AD4199394). I think you are quite likely correct that Judith was daughter of Richard Butler (abt.1699-1771) and Henrietta Percy (-1794). Multiple sources confirm the 10 children figure, but only 8 are listed in Peerage, consistent with one or more being disinherited/discounted. The family lore comes from somewhere! http://thepeerage.com/p19446.htm#i194454
