Biography

James Butler was born in 1813. The Census of 1841 shows a James Butler, carman, aged 30 living at Windmill Street off the Tottenham Court Road with his wife Ann, also 30, and children, Eliza 14, Mary 12, James 11, Emma 10, Louisa 8, George 6, Sophie 4, Maria 2 and Thomas just 3 days old. Although ages given in the 1841 census are notoriously inaccurate, it cannot be said with any certainty that this James was the son of John George II.

Interestingly, a J Butler was shown in a Trade Directory of 1833 as a grocer living at 29 Windmill Street, but was no longer there in 1834.

There is another James Butler in the 1841 Census, living at Tottenham (Court Road?), St Pancras, aged 22, a painter and also a Sarah Butler 24, either his wife or his sister. The age of James is not a good match and for this reason he can probably be discounted.
