Joseph E. was born about 1849.

At age thirty, Joseph married Mary Alice Stewart on 3 October 1880 in Cohasset, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of William F and Elizabeth C (Damon) Stewart. She was twenty-four at the time of marriage. [1] Another source records her age at marriage as thirty-one. [2]
