She and her twin sister Mary were baptised in St Columb Minor on 25 September 1814. Her name was recorded as Martha Byfield, with her mother's name being recorded as Ann Teague:
However, by the time of her marriage, she was using the surname Teague. It seems likely that her father used the name Teague, as in his marriage to Ann Harris in 1797 he signed his name Antony Teague.(See Research Note, below)
Martha married Thomas James Teague, a mariner, on 31 May 1849 in the parish of St Columb Minor. Martha was a bonnet maker. Thomas's occupation was, like that of his father and his father-in-law, Mariner.[3]
