Biography

John was born about 1633. He married Susanna Scrace in 1662, in Clayton, Sussex. [1]

He was the brother-in-law of Richard Turner whose sister, Cordelia, was married to William Scrase, Susanna's brother. [2]

Executor of the will of his father, John, in 1658. [3]

Younger brother of Christopher Bysshe, his father's heir. In 1669, Thomas Bysshe, son of Christopher was admitted into his father's lands through John's agency as the boy's uncle (and likely foster parent as the boy was an orphan and only 10 at the time.)

"In 1647 Richard Challoner younger son of Walter Challoner gent. surrendered Dewes and Knowles in Ardingly held of the Manor of Ditchling to John Bysshe Clerk for life and afterwards to the use of Christopher Bysshe his son. In 1665 Christopher Bysshe gent. was dead and Mary his widow held these lands for her widow's bench; in 1669 it is presented that Mary Greenefeild widow of John Greenefeild and relict of Christopher Bysshe deceased is dead; Thomas Bysshe her youngest son is admitted to the above lands in the person of John Bysshe his uncle as he is only 10 years old." [4]

"Mr. John Bysshe" was buried April 28, 1680. [5]

John Bysshe was survived by his widow Susan. [6]

  2. The Scrase Family In my account of this ancient and highly respectable Sussex family given in Vol. VIII. of our Collections, I declare my inability to discover whom Richard, the son of Tuppin Scrase of Blatchington, married, (See p. 10, and genealogical table No. 1.) In a genealogical table of the same family, No. III., p. 16., I have stated Cordelia to be the Christian name of the wife of William Scrase who was first of Dichling, and afterwards of Pyecombe, not then knowing her maiden surname. I have since been informed by the Rev. Edward Turner, that they both married Turners of Oldland. It appears from a pedigree of this family in his possession, that William Scrase married Cordelia--or Cordiall, as she is there called--the tenth, and Richard Scrase, Elizabeth, the nineteenth, of the twenty-two children of Thomas Turner of Oldland, gentleman. The will of William Turner, the fifteenth member of this patriarchal family, who married Anne Boniface of Blachington, and is described as of Newtimber, names Cordiall Scrase as his sister; and Richard Turner, the eldest, who succeeded his father in the Oldland estate in 1681, mentions in his will, John Bysshe and William Scrase as his brothers-in-law. Mark Antony Lower.> If Richard and William, sons of Tuppin Scrase married Turners, as suggested by Lower, then Susanna is their sister and daughter of Tuppin. However, Richard's will of 1635 indicates he died young and unmarried and his sister Susanna was married to Edward Blaker of Portslade. According to the Sussex Archaeological Collections pedigree above, Susanna's brother William Scrase married a Cordelia, so she is likely to be the Cordelia Turner mentioned.
