Ellen was the daughter of Hugh and Agnes McDonnell Caldwell. She was living with her parents in Mornington Township in Perth County, when she was four years old[1] and in Burleigh Township, in Peterborough County in 1871[2]and 1881[3]She married Edward Nolan when she was about 26 years old.[4] They were the parents of three children.[5]
The family farmed in Douro township for many years.[6] Their only daughter died of illness at age 12, but their two sons were still living with them in 1911[7]and in 1921.[8]
Ellen died at age 64 on the family farm and is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Douro Township, Peterborough County.[9]
The 1921 census shows a daughter Marie, age 15, living with Edward and Ellen and their sons James and Hugh,[10] though she is not found on the 1911 Census in this family. Could they have taken in a young relative or other orphan some time after the 1911 Census? Their daughter Mary died in 1903 at age 12.
