Biography

Patrick Calhoun Caldwell was born 10 Mar 1801, the son of William Thomas Caldwell and Elizabeth Ann Williams. He graduated from South Carolina College (now University of South Carolina) in 1820, and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1822, at the age of 21. Patrick served as state representative for Newberry, South Carolina, 1838-1840, member of the 27th Congress, 1841-1843, and state senator for Newberry, 1848-1852. He married 13 Dec 1827 to Frances Elizabeth Nance, daughter of Major Frederick Nance and Elizabeth Rutherford Nance. Frances died less than five years later on 03 Mar 1832, leaving no known surviving children. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Patrick's father built a house in Newberry County, which became Patrick and Frances's home. In 1950, the house was known as the "Hornsby Home." [5]
In 1830, Patrick and Frances resided in Newberry, South Carolina, apparently with another couple and their young daughter: [6]

1 f., aged 15-19
1 f., aged <5
In 1850, Patrick resided in Newberry with his elder brother John. [7]
According to Thomas H. Pope, III, Patrick "was extremely popular in Newberry." [8] He passed away on 22 Nov 1855 from the effects of a stroke of paralysis that he received three years before, [9] and is buried in the Nance Family Graveyard in Newberry, South Carolina. [10]
Patrick's sister Elizabeth wrote of her brother in her prayer journal:
"My dear brother Patrick breathed his last on the 22 he has been my constant cair and thought for three years how I have prayed for him that God in wisdom should restore him to his mind but as this was denied me I saw him gradually sink into the peaceful arms of death calm and undisturbed as an infant going to sleep his countenance assuming a childlike look sweet and serean thanks be to God that I was spared to close his eyes and was enabled whilst he lived to administer to his evry want thanks be to my dear companion for affording me the servants to assist me in my arduous duty to him. Rest in peace untill the last trump of God call thee to his Judgment." [11]

Family Tradition

Patrick was named for his uncle Patrick Calhoun, and was first cousin to statesman John C. Calhoun. In 1817, when Patrick was 16, he rode his younger sister Elizabeth, age 14, by pillion from Newberry to Salem Academy, North Carolina -- a journey of about 170 miles. Patrick and Elizabeth's parents had died within weeks of each other in Dec 1814 and Jan 1815, and it was probably their eldest brother John who took in his younger siblings, based on the fact that John was listed as Elizabeth's guardian in her application to Salem Academy. Patrick never remarried after his wife Frances died, and with no children of his own, Patrick gave or willed his Mu Sigma Phi fraternity key to his sister Elizabeth. The key was passed down maternal lines to Patrick's great grand niece Sarah Tradewell (McIntosh) Taylor.
