William Calnan was born about 1829 at County Kilkenny, Ireland.[1]
William migrated to the Port Phillip District, Colony of New South Wales (Victoria, Australia) before 1849.
He married Ellen Boyle on 12th November 1849 in St Francis' Roman Catholic Church, Melbourne, Victoria.[2] They settled on land at Murchison Road, Violet Town, a small town in the north-west of Victoria, 175 kilometres from Melbourne. William and Ellen had eight children:
After a 'long and serious illness borne with Christian resignation', William passed away, aged 54 years, on 20th May 1883 at home at Violet Town, Victoria.[3] He was survived by Ellen and at least five of their children (dates of death for two are not presently known). The newspaper obituary declared of William, "Deeply regretted by all who knew him."[4]
the Victorian BDM index indicates that WIlliam was 54 at the time of his death, however, the newspaper obituary places him at 64 years.
