Biography

Nancy Calverley was christened in Campsall, Yorkshire, on 28th February 1739, the daughter of Thomas Calverley [1] [2]

Marriage: On 19th December 1762, Moses Foster married Nancy Calvarah at the church of St Mary Magdalen in Campsall. The image available online [3] is hard to read; the bride's name has been transcribed as "Nancy Calrarah" [4] or "Mary Calvarah" [5]. My best reading of the whole entry is:

Banns of marriage between Moses Foster of the Parish of Womersley and Nancy Calvarah of this Parish were published Novr 18 & Dec 5 & 19th. The said Moses Foster of the Parish of Wormersley and Nancy Calvarah of this parish were married in this Parish Church by Banns this 19th day of December...

Both husband and wife made their mark rather than signing their name. Witnesses were Nathaniel Hardinglay (sgned), Thomas Hardinglay (signed) and Sarah Hardinglay (made her mark).

Children (Note that John might not have been hers):

  1. Sarah, baptised at Campsall on 19th October 1763, her father named as Moses Fosterd of Campsall [6].
  2. Elizabeth, baptised at Womersley on 27th November 1768, daughter of Moses Foster, Stubs Walden [7]; may have married a Richard Noson of Owston on 19th January 1790[8].
  3. Moses, baptised at Womersley on 2nd October 1771, son of Moses Foster [9], died at Walden Stubbs, buried 4th January 1772 in Womersley [10].
  4. John, born 3rd September 1777, baptised 2nd November 1777 in Womersley, son of Moses (a farmer) and Mary (sic) of Stubbs Walden [11]; buried 9th January 1772 in Womersley, son of Moses Foster, Walden Stubbs [12]
  5. Aaron, christened in Womersley on 27th December 1772, son of Moses Foster, Walden Stubbs [13]. No further record in Womersley but an Aaron Foster married Mary Depledge in Pontefract on 10th November 1807 [14]
  6.  Moses, baptised 4th June 1775 in Womersley, son of Moses Foster, Walden Stubbs [17]
  7. Hannah, born 2nd June 1780, baptised 5th June 1780 in Womersley, daughter of Moses (Labourer) and Nancy, Stubbs Walden [15]; married Benjamin Morton, widower, 12th December 1802 [16].

Death: Ann Foster, "wife of Moses, Labourer, Walden Stubbs", died of consumption and was buried in the churchyard at Womersley, "without (i.e., outside) the rails", on 29th November 1797, her age given as 57 years [17].

Research Notes

Mother's birth: The most likely baptism online is of "Sarah Daughter of Thomas Hill of Norton" on 13th September 1692 in Campsall [18]. There is also a baptism there of a Thomas Hill, son of Thomas, in October 1695 [19] and Anne Hill, daughter of Thomas, in September 1697 [20]. I cannot find any Campsall marriages of Thomas Hill that could be his. There is a possible baptism: May 1645, son of Thomas [21]; I cannot read it at all.
