Biography

The Campbells of Balgirsho are traditionally said to be descended from the House of Loudoun although the exact relationship is now unknown. This is questionable as they descend from Colin Campbell of Crunan. Colin appears to be one of the several sons of Donald Campbell, Abbot of Coupar Angus Abbey. Born about 1520 he may have been a legitimate son by an unrecorded marriage of Donald prior to him taking Holy Orders in 1530.

Colin married Isabel Richardson in 1555. Their Prenuptial contract dated 30 April 1555 granted by Donald, Abbot of Coupar sett them jointly a tack of the half town and lands of Crunan which Archibald Anderson possessed and enjoyed before together with tiends of same and one sixth part of Balmyle which the umquhile Andrew Crockat had possessed.[1]

They had issue,

  • George being his heir was born about 1556.
  • Grizel b, abt 1569 mar. Lauchlan Farquharson

In 1557, the Abbot sett a tack to Colin Campbell and Isabel Richardson and to an heir male of a quarter of the town and lands of Easter Inverharity which Richie Clerk possessed before and which he exchanged with Colin for Nether Auchlechie.[2]

Feu charter by Donald Abbot and Commendator of the Cistercian order of Abbey of Cupar with consent of Chapter was granted on 11 May 1558 in favour of Colin Campbell and his son George Campbell of the lands of Crunan, the fourth part lands of Easter Inverharity, the sixth part of Balmyle.[3] Colin and George then took sasine of these lands on 29 May 1558.[4]

Colin was a witness at Stirling on 30 December 1566 when Archibald earl of Argyll, lord Campbell granted a feu charter to John Clerk, younger, son and heir-apparent of Richard Clerk in Glenmarkie, of a fourth part of the lands of Glenmarkie in the barony of Glenisla. [5]

Colin appears as a witness to many of the contracts of Coupar Angus Abbey.[6]

Among the latest of these, Colin was witness on 20 Oct 1581 to a charter in favour of Alexander Leslie of five acres to the east of land of William Campbell of Souterhouses. [7] He appears to have deceased about 1585.
