WM. S. CAMPBELL DIES WHILE EN ROUTE TO RIFLE.
William Shockey Campbell, for many years a resident of Rifle and widely known in thisvicinity, passed away on March 26th while enroute to Rifle to visit his son,William Campbell. Mr. Campbell had been for the past fifteen years a residentat the National Soldiers’ Home at Sawtelle, California, and was in the habit ofvisiting Rifle each spring to see his sons who reside here and in Grand Valley. While on the train speeding through Utah he was taken suddenly ill and beforereaching Price, Utah, had passed away. The body was removed from the train atthat place and relatives here notified. The sudden death of Mr. Campbell cameas a severe shock to his sons and his friends here who were looking forward to avisit.
William S. Campbell was born in Rochester, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, on July 3rd, 1839, and passed away on March 26th, 1920, being at the time of his death 80 years and 8 months of age.
He was married at West Bridgewater, Pa., to Sarah Jane Porter, who died near Rifle in February, 1899. To this union were born four children, all of whom are still living, Harry P. Campbell of Rifle, Mrs. Eva Campbell Beall of Denver, William M. Campbell of Rifle, and Mrs. Belle Lampkin of Pendleton, Oregon. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Clara Fry and Mrs. Ollie Langhlin [sic] of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Campbell served in the Civil War, winning for himself a record for valor and bravery. In 1865 [sic--this can’t be right] he moved to this vicinity where he resided until the death of his wife.
