Note: After extensive research, I have come to the conclusion that this Duncan is NOT Lord Ormelie, but Duncan of Duncroisk (OPR marriage record, Buchanan, April 16, 1684) who married a Marjorie Campbell.[1]
Duncan Campbell, son of John Campbell 1st Earl of Breadalbane and Holland and Lady Mary Rich probably had some kind of mental incapacity, as his father's peerage patents allowed him to disinherit him in favor of his brother John. The prevailing theory is he was styled as Lord Ormelie between 1681 and 1727, never married and had no children. This profile has been disconnected from his previous parents and the dates removed.
The other theory is that he was simply not in good graces with his father, who used the provision in the letters patent to disinherited him, which I think is unlikely because he did use the courtesy title until his death and the only evidence for his heirs is a Gaelic ballad which referred to Duncan marrying.
I did read the court cases(!) regarding this peerage, including Donald and Donald's brother John contesting the succession of the title. The case was resolved rather unsatisfactorily in Donald's case because it never resolved the parentage of Duncan. In a later case, it was determined blood of the 1st Earl of Breadalbane was corrupted by attainter which was only reversed for the 2nd son of John Campbell, 2nd Earl only, which was successfully claimed by Gavin Campbell, an heir of the 1st Earl's brother as 7th Earl of Breadalbane and Holland who was created 1st Marquis of Breadalbane in 1885.[2]
Duncan was born about 1660. Duncan Campbell ... He passed away about 1727.
In researching this person on the Internet, I found conflicting information as to whether he was ever married. He was the son of Sir John Campbell and was alledgedly passed-over for a Scottish title. However, he is also referred to as Lord Ormelie.
