The date of birth for John Campbell, Sr, is unknown. It has been conservatively estimated by the date of birth for his eighth child, Tunis Gulic Campbell Sr, and is likely earlier. His place of birth is somewhat questionable. In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Tunis was listed with his father being "of foreign birth." (His mother, on the other hand--who is at the time of this writing still unknown--is not listed as foreign born.) In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Tunis lists both his parents as born in New Jersey. At Tunis's death, the Undertakers Return form lists Tunis's father's birthplace as Princeton, New Jersey (though one can see an earlier location was first written, then crossed out, and Princeton added, apparently all in the same handwriting and likely at the same time). His mother's name and birthplace are marked unknown. In the Massachusetts Death Registry, Tunis is entered with father, John, and John's birthplace is listed as Princeton.
Tunis wrote in his memoir, Sufferings of The Rev. T.G. Campbell and His Family, In Georgia, that his father was a freeman and a blacksmith.
John and his wife had ten children--five sons and five daughters. At the time of this writing, nothing is known of the older children, but Tunis was the eighth child and final son born to the family and had two younger sisters. Tunis was born in 1812.
From at least April 1812 to about 1831, John and his family lived in Middlebrook, Somerset County, New Jersey. John then moved his family to New Brunswick, New Jersey.
The date of John's death is unknown.
