Biography

VICTORI EMMANUEL CARANDINI (Carandini-15)

PARENTS. Jerome Carandini & Maria (Burgess) Carandini

BIRTH. 3 Jul 1861, Belfast, Victoria, Australia

BIRTH. At Belfast, Victoria, on 3rd instant, MADAME CARANDINI, of a son.

(1886). The Mayor's Ball. BRISBANE. This much looked forward to event came off in the Exhibition Building on Thursday night, the 6th inst., and just to condense matters before going into detail, may safely be pronounced an unqualified success, and the whole affair to have gone off with unprecedented brilliancy and eclat. . . . . MR. VICTOR CARANDINI was another magnificently and most becomingly dressed man, and the title "Prince Charming" was well bestowed, the tall lithe figure, and bright handsome face of the wearer, lending a thousand charms to the pink and heliotrope costume, which was of a cloak, doublet and knee breeches, all slashed, and one color combined with the other, and softened by rich honiton lace ruffles, &c., hair powdered. (May 1887). TOWNSVILLE. Mr. Victor Carandini, who has lately retired from the firm of Messrs. Banks and Carandini, architects, of Brisbane, is about to begin the practice of his profession in Townsville. Mr Carandini has sent in designs for the Townsville Central Fire Brigade Station, and has submitted a design for the Bonded Stores. (Sep 1887). BRISBANE. A Projected Concert Hall. As may be seen in another column, tenders are being invited for the erection if a new building in Adelaide street, from designs which have been prepared by Mr. Victor Carandini, architect. Eagle street.

The site is near Tattersall's Hotel, with n frontage of over 54 feet to Adelaide street, and the building when completed will comprise, on ground floor: Two double front shops, 8 offices, and an assembly room ; and on the first floor, a music hall 90 x 45, with gallery to seat about 800 persons, together with a stage and all necessary retiring rooms, &c.

Particular attention is to be given to the construction of the floor and roof of this hall in order to obtain favour for dancing and musical purposes, points which the architect hopes to gain through the agency of laying patent decorated pavodilo flooring, and constructing a light coved iron roof. The ceiling of ground floor is to be lined with iron as a preventive against fire, and no less than four extra exits are arranged for in case of an alarm being given. The light and ventilation for the hall will be chiefly arranged for in the roof, and partly for these purposes a large sliding skylight has been provided which, when removed, will leave a clear open space of 15 feet by 10 feet, and may be closed at a moment's notice. The hall will be tastefully decorated, and the building is expected to be finished in about five months. (Oct 1887). ALBION. An adjourned special general meeting of the shareholders of the Albion Public Hall Company, Limited, was held at their office, Mr. H. Powell's store, Albion, on Friday evening, October 28. Mr. A. M'Nish Fraser in the chair. Two-thirds of the shareholders were represented either in person or by proxy. The meeting was called for tho purpose of approving of one plan out of the many sent in by different architects, and it was unanimously decided by ballot that Mr. Victor Carandini's sketch plan be approved of subject to such slight modifications as the directors may see fit. The other sketch plans so generously provided came in for high encomiums for their artistic finish and design, but owing to their being either above the stipulated price or not of the requisite size, they had to be rejected. The building will be 108 feet long by 39 feet wide, including two shops in front, and lodge-rooms over the shops, and when finished will be both an ornament and a benefit to the whole of the Albion and surrounding districts. The whole of the shares, with the exception of 300, are now taken up, and these are expected to be applied for within a few days. (1888). 15 May: A new place of amusement in Brisbane, the Centennial Hall, was opened last evening. The architect was Mr. Victor Carandini. The opening function was a masquerade. The 'Courier' writer said. (Dec 1897). "Melbourne Punch" of the 16th instant has the following :— "Victor Carandini, architect and patent agent, died in London on Thursday last, at the early age of 36. It seems only the other day that he was in Melbourne full of health and vigour. Mr. Carandini was the second son of the late Marchese Carandini dl Sarzano, the head of the family of famous vocalists formerly well known in Australia. The deceased gentleman was a brother of Mrs. Palmer (nee Carandini), who is so well known on the concert platforms of this city. " Mr. Carandini was very well known in Brisbane, where he carried on his profession as an architect for some years. It is understood that he recently went to London from India in connection with a starting machine which it was proposed should be used on the English racecourses.

(22 Jan 1898). THE CARANDINIS. The writer of "Personal Notes from London," in the Sydney Daily Telegraph, has the following under date December 10:--"Old opera-goers all over Australia and New Zealand will learn with deep regret the catastrophe which has overtaken the Carandini family, whose name was for a long time a household word amongst musical Antipodeans. I heard it from Mr. Pritchard-Morgan, M.P., who had just returned from paying Lady Morland (nee Carandini) a melancholy visit. One of the most favoured by fortune of the younger Carandinis was till recently Victor, madame's son, a splendid musician, and described by Mr. Morgan as "strong as Hercules, and handsome as a god." A few weeks ago Mr. Carandini suffered some slight inconvenience, and consulted a doctor. The medical man looked rather grave, and said a slight operation might be necessary. He did not, however, designate the complaint. In due course the operation took place, when the surgeons found they could do nothing. The disease-which I assume to be cancer of the throat--had gone too far. Victor Carandini now lies dying in his sister's house at Kensington. "For all I know," wound up Mr. Morgan, "he may be dead now". " [Mr. Carandini has, we regret to state, since died.--Ed. Q.T.] Queensland Times, Ipswich Herald and General Advertiser (Qld. : 1861 - 1908) Saturday 22 January 1898, p4 http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/124147349

(29 Jan 1898). Word has been received from England, of the death of Mr. Victor Carandini, the inventor at one of the most serviceable starting machines yet seen on a colonial raceoouirse.
