Research Notes

"The Carleton Family. — Mark Carleton and family, certificate, dated 4, 3, 1711, from Monthly Meeting at Mountmellick, Ireland. He is " Ye Son of an early Laborour (of ye breaking forth of ye Gospel Day) in ye word and Testimony of our Lord Jesus, and his wife ye Daughter of honest friends of this meeting." Received 8, 25, 1711, at Philadelphia, Monthly Meeting. Thomas Carleton, b. 1636 in Little Salkeld, Cumberland, England, like his father, spent much of his life as a farmer. He was one of the early converts to Quakerism and became an eminent minister of the Society. He m. Isabel Mark, of Mosedale, Cumberland. . . . Mark Carleton of Ballylickbo, son of Thomas and Isabel, formerly of Mosedale, Cumberland, was married 11, 25, 1698, to Susanna Watson, of Ballymeane at Edenderry. They removed to Pennsylvania in 1711, producing a certificate of removal, dated 4, 3, 1711, to Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, 8, 25, 1711.

He died on the voyage and his widow in 1713 m. Richard Parks, and settled in Goshen.

Thomas Carleton (son of above), was b. 9, 18, 1699, at Ballyhayken, near Edenderry, Ireland; d. in Kennet Township, 9, 30, 1792. In 1720 he settled in Kennet, where he m. 3, 20, 1730, Hannah Roberts, widow of Robert Roberts, and dau. of William Howell of Haverford. Thomas and his wife were active members of Kennet Meeting, and both were ministers. They had issue: (i) Susanna, b. 3, 29, 1731 ; d. 6, 10, 1789; m. Michael Harlan, No. 73. (ii) Thomas, b. 8, 21, 1732 ; d. 6, 26, 1803 ; m. Lydia Gregg, No. 104. " [3]

One source erroneously states that Thomas was a son of Thomas Carleton and Isabelle (Mark) Carleton.[4] In fact, the Thomas Carleton who was the son of Thomas and Isabel was Thomas's uncle Thomas Carleton Jr. (1672-aft.1711).

Thomas married Hannah Roberts "on the 3rd month 20, 1730 [20 MAY 1730]; widow of Robert Roberts, and daughter of William Howell, of Haverford. She was born 5 mon 17, 1689 and died 5 mon 6, 1758. Thomas died 9 mon 30, 1792. He and his wife were active members of Kennett Meeting and both eminent ministers." [More notes from the above named source]

Source discusses the children of Mark and Susanna Carleton and their movements from England to Ireland and their children and associated marriages. [5]

This source is a very descriptive history of the Early Irish Quakers in Pennsylvania and their MM locations in the late 1600's and 1700's. In it is also the signature of one Thomas Carleton, who was said to be "one of the most eminent ministers of this meeting [Kennett] was Thomas Carleton, a native of King's County, Ireland." [6]
