Biography

Canada Flag
Howard Carlson was born in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Howard Arvid Carlson was born 17 Jan 1940 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.[1] He was the eldest of six children (four boys and two girls) born to Herold Gerhardt Egbert Carlson and Eva (Walmsley) Carlson.

Howard was raised on the family farm about four and one half miles south-east of Swanson, Saskatchewan. He attended school at Swanson until age 15, when he attended Concordia College, a boarding school in Edmonton, Alberta. He came back to Saskatchewan for his grade 12 at Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute, a boarding school in Outlook, Saskatchewan. After high school, Howard took training as a nursing orderly at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

Howard married Gail Silverthorn on 12 February 1960 in the United Church at Ardath, Saskatchewan. They lived and worked in Saskatoon (him as an orderly and her as a bank teller) for a short period of time following their marriage. They moved to Gaylord Carlson's farm to help manage it for about a year. Uncle Gaylord was suffering the after-effects of contracting malaria in Italy during World War II. It was during their time on Gaylord's farm that their eldest child, David, was born.

The small family moved back to Saskatoon and Howard was working as an orderly at Saskatoon City Hospital. They lived in a basement suite at 736 9th Ave. N. Over the next few years, two daughters, Sonja and Sheila, were added to the family.

In 1965 everyone moved to a duplex at 127 Lower West Keith Road in North Vancouver, British Columbia. David attended St. Mary's Elementary School and Howard worked as an orderly at Lions Gate Hospital. While there he trained as an orthopædic technologist (application and removal of casts and splints). A son, Trent, was born at this time. Very soon after, the larger family moved to an apartment on the corner of Lonsdale Ave. and Upper Levels Highway in North Vancouver. David attended North Star Elementary School. The apartment was just too small for the growing family so Howard and Gail started looking for a home farther afield. They found a two acre lot with a three bedroom bungalow and a one bedroom guesthouse at 12742 11th Ave. in the small community of Haney, British Columbia, about thirty miles to the east of Vancouver. They moved there in the spring of 1967. While in Haney: Howard continued to work as an orthopædic technologist at Lions Gate Hospital (about a 40 minute commute one way); David, Sonja, Sheila and Trent all attended Yennadon Elementary School; the youngest in the family, a daughter, July, was born; Howard became a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Auxiliary. In 1973 the whole family moved to 12742 228th St., Maple Ridge, British Columbia. They didn't actually move. The name of the town changed and the street numbers were changed to extend the street numbers of Vancouver. Vancouver was bounded to the south by the US border, to the west by the ocean and to the north by mountains. There was a lot of growth upward (taller buildings) but most of the expansion was to the east along the Fraser River toward Maple Ridge.

By 1974, Howard's daily commute by car from home in Maple Ridge to work in North Vancouver taking close to 2 hours each morning and evening. Time to make a change! In October 1974, Gail and the children packed everything and moved to the Carlson family farm near Swanson, Saskatchewan. Howard followed about 2 weeks later. A farming company known as Swanson Farms was formed by Howard, his parents, his siblings and their spouses.
