Biography

Carl Johan CARLSSON, son of Johan Salomon CARLSSON (1849-1940) and Ingrid SVENSDOTTER (1851-1903), was born on 11 November 1879 in Södra Ljunga Parish, Kronoberg, Sweden. He grew up on his father’s farm. His older brother, Albert, left for North America in 1897, and over the next few years, his younger brother, Swan, and sister, Nellie, also left for America. In the meantime, Carl Johan served in the Swedish Armed Forces in 1900 and was released in 1901.

Finally in 1903, he decided to go to North America. He sailed from Copenhagen into New York, arriving the 27th of July. He was supposed to meet his brother, Albert, in British Columbia, Canada, but when he arrived, Albert was still in Illinois, and had not yet moved on to Canada. They finally met in Chicago where Carl worked in a bakery. They left Chicago about 1906 and may have gone to British Columbia and sought their fortune working in the mines. In 1908, though, Carl decided to return to Sweden.

On his return he worked on his father’s farm in Hamneda. Later, he worked as a tenant farmer. In 1910, he moved to Pjätteryd Parish where he met Sally EKMAN of the Södra Ljunga Parish where the family had lived before going to Hamneda. On 23 December 1910, he married Sally Helga Alfrida EKMAN in Pjätteryd Parish, Kronoberg, Sweden, where she lived with her parents.

They lived in Pjätteryd for a while after they married and there three sons were born, the latter two were twins. He continued to work as a farmer. Then they moved to Älmhult. There he began to work as a contract carrier, then he started his own business as a carrier. They moved back to Pjätteryd in 1917. In 1919 he and his four children, all small at the time, attended the party for his father’s 70th birthday. Sally was pregnant with their fifth child at the time.

They had five children, three sons and two daughters. They remained in Pjätteryd until 1940, when they went back Älmhult. Earlier that year, one of the twins, Tage, died, In Älmhult, he spent rest of his life. Carl Johan died in 1959 in Älmhult, Kronoberg, Sweden.
