Biography

Zora was born in 1884. Zora is the child of Daniel Carlton.

Aunt Zo was an educator as were many in her family. She taught in local Elbert county Georgia schools and was the first principal of Stephens Elementary in Elberton. She retired from teaching in 1952.

She lived with her sister Lela Elizabeth Carlton Adams Hall (my grandmother) after her marriage to my grandfather George James Hall. He considered almost scandalous for a single woman to live alone when there was family in town. So she lived with that family from the time of my father's birth and was like a second mother to him.

Aunt Zo lived with our family for about 10 years moving in when I was about nine. My grandmother had died and her sister Mary Alice Carlton died just a few months later. Aunt Zo had helped care for both sisters in their last years with my grandmother and a few months with Aunt Mary. She kept records of all of the descendants of Daniel Milton Carlton. Her sister Mary Alice Carlton German had possession of the family records (family bible) of the Thomas Carlton Jr. family record. Her great niece Louise Carlton Stakely had possession of the Burch family bible records Thomas and Sarah Jones Burch. These women kept careful records themselves and shared their records with each other. Virginia Claire Carlton Duggan my father's first cousin shared copies of these family records with the compiler of this book.
