Charlotte (Carmichael) Stopes is Notable.
Charlotte Brown Carmichael, also known as C. C. Stopes, was a scholar, author, and campaigner for women's rights who also published several books relating to the life and work of William Shakespeare. One of her daughters was Marie Stopes, known for her advocacy of birth control.

Charlotte Brown Carmichael was baptised in the parish of St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian on 5 February 1840. She was the daughter of James Ferrier Carmichael and Christian Brown Graham.[1]

Charlotte's father was a teacher of drawing and the family lived in George Stret, Edinburgh[2]

After her father's death, Charlotte worked as a governess in Edinburgh while living at home with her family, where her mother was also a teacher and, latterly, a boarding house keeper.[3][4]

Charlotte married Henry Stopes on 3 June 1879 in the St Andrew district of Edinburgh.[5]

The couple had two children:

  1. Marie Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (born St Andrew, Edinburgh 1880) [6]
  2. Winifred Christine Stopes (born June q 1884 Croydon)[7]

Shortly after Marie's birth, the couple had moved to the district of Croydon in Surrey where, by 1891, Charlotte was confident enough in her work to describe herself as an "authoress"[8][9]

The family then moved to Hampstead, London where, by 1911, the widowed Charlotte described herself as an "historical author" working "at home" and at the "Record Office"[10][11]

Charlotte died in a nursing home "on the south coast" on 6 February 1929. Her death was registered in East Preston, Sussex in the first quarter of 1929.[12] Charlotte was buried in Highgate Cemetery, London.
