Biography

James Carnie was born about 1828.

Emigration to Australia. James was aged 20 when the Carnie family arrived per the Ship "Cheapside" having sailed from Plymouth on 21st May 1848 and arriving Port Phillip on 28th August 1848 at 2 p.m. (a voyage of 87 days). In 1848, the Port Phillip District was still part of the Colony of New South Wales.

Alexander Carnie was a 44-year-old Agricultural labourer from ""Dunfarlin Fifeshire"; his wife Margaret was 42. They were accompanied by five children in their immediate family group: David (12), Andrew (10), Henry (8), John (6) and Isabella (3).

A second couple from Fifeshire, also an Alexander Carnie (23, ag lab) and his wife, Margaret (28), were on the same ship. All were from Fife, and were Presbyterian. The adults could read and write. [1]

A second passenger list, the Disposal list, adds three more children to the family group quoted above. They would have been numbered among the single men and women in the Nominal List. They were: James (20, laborer), Margaret (18, housemaid) and William (16, laborer).

Signing up for a year, Alexander and Margaret Carney and the eldest boy, James, were employed by Riley & Barker, Wannon River, which in the western part of the Port Phillip District. Alexander and Margaret would get £55 between them, with rations, and James £20 with rations. The other children accompanied their parents to Wannon River, except for Margaret. She gained employment with Mrs Bear of Williamstown, signing up for 6 months work at £18 with rations.

The other married couple, Alexander and Margaret Carnie, were hired by Riley & Barker, too. (It would appear that Alexander is another son.) They were hired at £35, with rations, for a year. [2]

Marriage.

Death. He passed away in 1902.
