History - Arrived as Convict: • 1829 Convicted 23 Mar 1829 Location Sussex, England — Age: 19 o Tried for robbing a chapel. Along with John Holden and William Hones he was found guilty of sacrilegiously entering the Chapel of Ease at Brighton and stealing therein articles the property of T R Kemp Esq. They were sentenced to Transportation for Life. o No prior convictions. o Sentenced to Life o Departed England 20/5/1829 from Spithead, Hampshire on convict ship ‘NORFOLK’ o Arrived in Australia 27 August 1829 at Sydney Cove Height 5 feet 4.5 inches Complexion ruddy freckles Hair brown Eyes blue General remarks small perpendicular scar left side of upper lip. Raised mole on right cheek

He was listed as Protestant, government servant at Port Macquarie • 1839 Ticket of Leave 12 December 1839— Age: 30 o Penrith, NSW, Australia o Ticket Of Leave 39/2383 o Ticket of Leave Occupation - Labourer • 1842 at Age: 33 Permission to Marry was granted 3/11/1842 by Rev R K Scone South Creek • 1844 Married Esther Tolhurst St Marys South Creek, NSW, Australia • 1848, 1st June received Condition Pardon Sydney NSW • 1859 at aged 50 his son, John Carpenter, was born in St Mary’s NSW. He was listed as Labourer, Esther was 31 years • 1889 Census he was aged 79 and was living at Penrith NSW A chapel of ease (or chapel-of-ease) is a church building other than the parish church, built within the bounds of a parish for the attendance of those who cannot reach the parish church conveniently. Often such a chapel of ease is deliberately built as such, being more accessible to some parishioners than the main church. Soon after becoming a formal chapel of ease, the Chapel Royal was consecrated by the Bishop of Chichester, John Buckner. However, by that date (16 August 1803), the Prince Regent was no longer worshipping there
