Thomas Carpenter, son of Stephen Carpenter, was born 1747 and married Elizabeth Haviland, daughter of John Haviland & Sarah Sneathing. They had issue: Sarah, Mary, Thomas, John and Charity. He died in 1817 in Harrison, NY. [1]
According to family tradition: "During the Revolution Thomas Carpenter was quartermaster under Gen. Thomas. At the Battle of White Plains, at a skirmish near Harrisons, the British surrounded a house which sheltered a party of Americans, including Gen. Thomas and Thomas Carpenter. All were taken prisoners excepting Thomas Carpenter, who was left for dead, but by careful nursing he finally recovered, and for his bravery was made captain and then general." [1] (However, genealogist Josephine C. Frost could not find any Revolutionary War record that named him as a General.)
