William was born in 1830, in Charlotte County, Virginia. He was the son of Paul Sydenham Carrington and Emma Catherine Cabell.
Graduated with an M. D. from University of Virginia 1847-1850. He chose to practice in New York until the outbreak of war when he offered his services to Virginia. He was appointed, on 16 May 1861, as surgeon & Inspector of Hospitals to the 5th Virginia Volunteers. In July he was transferred to the 7th Virginia Infantry. On 1 Oct 1862, he became Inspector of Hospitals under General Gustavus Smith. By March 1863 he was Inspector of all Richmond hospitals and in Sept. 1864 he was appointed Medical Director of all of Virginia's hospitals[1].
On 13 Oct 1863, in Charlotte, he married Mildred Coles Carrington[2]. They were paternal 1st cousins (fathers were brothers). They had the following children.
It was said the war completely wore him out and left him in broken health. He returned to "Ridgeway" where he died a few days after his father on the 17 Jul 1866. He is buried at the private Carrington/Ridgeway cemetery.
